FIELD MANUAL

Stuck on a mission? Start here.

Watch a mission played from start to finish, with every tap and swipe shown, then open a hint for any of the first five chapters. Hints are starting points, not the only way through.

Watch a mission

A hand appears on every tap, and a finger slides along a trail whenever the board is dragged. Each step is captioned.

Chapter 1: Silent Ward
Read the board, trace the attacker, patch, restore, and close the operation. About 1 minute 40.
Chapter 2: Noise Floor
The attacker starts inside. Isolate, set a honeypot, restore, and close the operation in 5 turns. About 2 minutes 20.

Android preview

Zero Day Command is available as a free Android preview. It runs the same game engine as the iPhone version, so the same attacker moves the same way. These two recordings are Chapter 1 played on an Android emulator. Get the Android preview.

Seal off the clinical systems
Cut the route from Staff Workstations to File Server on turn 1, patch the clinical chain, and issue the Public Notice on turn 4. The patient database and medical devices never fall. Three other systems do, and the mission ends Silver. About 2 minutes 30.
Escalate, then recover
By turn 6 two systems are down, one of them Medical Devices. Spend credits on attacker intel, restore the node the attacker is on and the other one, and the network comes back. The mission ends Silver with one system lost. About 2 minutes 40.

How ratings work

Every finished mission shows a score out of 100 and a rating: Gold, Silver or Bronze. The rating does not come from the score. The game checks a list of conditions for each rating, Gold first, then Silver, then Bronze, and gives the first one you fully meet. If you meet none of them, the mission is failed.

Why a high score can still be Silver. Every Gold list includes “no systems breached” (in all five chapters). If the attacker gains access to a system at any point in the mission, Gold is out of reach, even if you restore that system a turn later. Systems that start the mission compromised do not count on their own; a fresh takeover does.

Intact means the system is not compromised when the mission ends. Trust and continuity are the values at the end. Closing an operation early with no actions taken, or with a system still compromised, counts as a failure.

Swipe the table sideways to see Silver and Gold.

ChapterBronzeSilverGold
1 Silent Ward Patient Database intact. Bronze, plus continuity 60 or more and trust 70 or more. Patient Database and Medical Devices intact, continuity 80 or more, trust 85 or more, evidence at least Medium, no breach.
2 Noise Floor Source Code Repository intact. Bronze, plus continuity 50 or more and trust 60 or more. Source Code Repository and Customer Database intact, continuity 72 or more, trust 78 or more, evidence High, no breach.
3 Dead Air Broadcast Control intact and trust 58 or more. Broadcast Control and Live Archive intact, trust 65 or more. Broadcast Control and Live Archive intact, continuity 78 or more, trust 80 or more, attribution confirmed (needs High evidence), no breach.
4 Trusted Neighbor SCADA Control Node intact. SCADA Control Node and Power Management System intact, continuity 55 or more. SCADA Control Node, Power Management System and SCADA Historian intact, continuity 75 or more, trust 80 or more, evidence High, no breach.
5 Dark Sector SWIFT Gateway and Core Banking Database intact. Bronze, plus trust 65 or more. SWIFT Gateway, Core Banking Database and Settlement Database intact, continuity 78 or more, trust 82 or more, no data exfiltrated, no breach.

A mission is also lost outright when a loss condition triggers, such as running out of turns or, in Chapters 3, 4 and 5, a critical system falling. The Chapter 2 walkthrough above finishes with Silver for exactly the reason in the first note: the attacker took the Build Server on turn 2.

Hints for the first five chapters

Each chapter has two levels. Open the first, and only open the second, which gives away the plan, if you are still stuck. Tip: tap a system to see its actions. To isolate, tap the route line between two systems, then tap Isolate.

1 Silent Ward

Goal: keep the Patient Database and Medical Devices uncompromised.

Hint

Look before you act. Scan and Trace raise evidence quality. The clinical systems are reached through the File Server, so follow the route from the Email Gateway down to see how far the attacker can get.

Stronger hint (spoilers)

Use your first turn to trace the Staff Workstations and the Email Gateway, then patch the Staff Workstations (2 AP). Restore anything that turns red, and conclude once nothing is compromised. The walkthrough above shows these steps.

2 Noise Floor

Goal: keep the Source Code Repository and the Customer Database safe. Evidence quality matters more than speed.

Hint

The attacker starts inside, on the VPN Endpoint, the Dev Workstations and the Build Server. The Source Code Repository connects only to the Build Server, so it is one hop from danger. The board is wider than the screen, so drag it to see the Mail Server side.

Stronger hint (spoilers)

Turn 1: Scan and Trace the Dev Workstations, then isolate the route from the Build Server to the Source Code Repository (tap the route line, then Isolate). Turn 2: the attacker heads for the Staging Environment, one hop from the Customer Database. Isolate the route between them, then put a Honeypot (2 AP) on Staging. It diverts the attacker and raises your evidence quality. Once evidence is Medium or better, Restore the red systems one at a time over turns 3 to 5 (Build Server, Dev Workstations, VPN Endpoint; 2 AP each), Trace until evidence is High, and conclude on a clean board. The walkthrough above finishes in 5 turns. Do not leave the attacker alone for long: if it digs in (persistence), Trust drops every turn.

3 Dead Air

Goal: keep Broadcast Control and the Live Archive safe, and finish with Trust at 58 or more. Losing Broadcast Control ends the mission at once.

Hint

Everything the attacker does starts at the CDN Gateway, and its only way onward is the Web Server. Public Notice costs Trust that you cannot win back, so only use it when your evidence supports it.

Stronger hint (spoilers)

Isolating the route between the CDN Gateway and the Web Server (1 AP) closes every path at once, as long as the attacker has not already passed it. Use the rest of your AP to Scan and Trace. Broadcast Control can be reached two ways, through the Broadcast Encoder (via the CMS Platform) and through the Playout System (via the Editorial Workstations), so watch both. Use Restore Link to reconnect the route when the board is clean.

4 Trusted Neighbor

Goal: keep the SCADA Control Node and the Power Management System safe. A compromised SCADA Control Node ends the mission at once.

Hint

The Vendor Integration Link connects only to the DMZ Router. From there two roads lead toward power: one through the Historian Gateway and SCADA Gateway, the other through the Engineering Workstations and the HMI Workstation.

Stronger hint (spoilers)

Isolate the link between the Vendor Integration Link and the DMZ Router early (1 AP). If the attacker is already past it, isolate the DMZ Router’s routes to the Historian Gateway and to the Engineering Workstations (1 AP each) so that neither road opens. The Power Management System is the last stop before the SCADA Control Node, so guard it, and use spare AP to Trace.

5 Dark Sector

Goal: keep the SWIFT Gateway and the Core Banking Database safe. A compromised SWIFT Gateway, or more than one exfiltration batch, ends the mission.

Hint

You only have 2 AP a turn. Scan, Trace and Isolate cost 1 AP, so you can do two of them. A Patch costs 2 AP, which is both of your AP. The Trading Gateway connects only to the Web Proxy.

Stronger hint (spoilers)

Isolate the route between the Trading Gateway and the Web Proxy first, then Trace. Everything onward passes through the Message Queue and then the SWIFT Connector, which connects to both the SWIFT Gateway and the Settlement Database (the road to the Core Banking Database). A second isolation at the SWIFT Connector, on a later turn, is a good safety net.
